43403 abstract Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a calcium phosphate bioceramic used commonly in tissue engineering due to its excellent potential as a bone replacement material. Next generation implantation technology will include functionalised HA surfaces to promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis via implanted hormone and growth factor. However, functionalisation of difficult; silicon substitution of monolith has long been considered a potential route to increasing the number of active binding sites in HA. We demonstrate in this conference proceeding (and accepted poster presentation) the surface modification/functionalisation of silicon substituted HA (SiHA) with thiol groups following a reaction with MPTS (SH-SiHA); an intimate bond is verified by a proof of principle attachment of a fluorescent probe.
