2775 abstract About the book: This text explores current changes in modern langauges in higher education regarding shifting concepts of "knowledge" and "culture" in academia and in society at large. It presents a map of the current state of modern languages in a period largely characterized by the erosion of disciplinary boundaries across the humanities. Contributors (including Christopher Brumfit, Ronald Barnett, Michael Kelly, Susan Bassnett) analyze the relationship between traditional and emerging components of modern languages, ranging from language learning and "area studies" to relatively new fields such as cultural studies and cross-cultural communication. The book should be of interest to all those involved in shaping modern languages for the 21st century, whether as teachers, learners or researchers.
