45588c09a1938c3241bbd67ca19837e8 research overview
My main research interests are in Discourse Analysis applied to topics in social psychology, health, illness and disability. Currently I am working on a study of the discourse of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the media and in support groups. My most recent line of research in this area is ADHD in adults.

These lines of research have emerged from a wider interest in medical controversy that comes from my doctoral research on the discourse of ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). I have a general interest in the use of bio-psycho-social explanations and mind-body arguments in debates about contested illnesses and conditions. I have published a number of papers on this topic ranging from the analysis of illness narratives, expertise and experience in support group talk, and doctors’ and patients’ use of bio-psycho-social reasoning.

Previous research has also included a study of reflective teaching practice using discourse and conversation analysis and this has interest in teaching contexts has also been applied to the analysis of ante-natal classes on pregnancy, childbirth and infant care.

I am an associate member of theCentre for Citizenship, Identities and Governance(CCIG) and a member of the Social Psychology Research Group at The Open University.

Horton-Salway, M.
