Frescobaldi’s Primo libro d’arie musicali (Florence: Landini, 1630) is richly
decorated with figural emblems, with moral and political implications. In conjunction
with the poetic texts, the emblems allude metaphorically to the city of Florence and
the volume’s dedicatee, Grand Duke Ferdinando II de’ Medici, and also to Frescobaldi’s
Roman patrons, the Barberini family. One emblem in particular ties Frescobaldi to
the Bolognese academician Adriano Banchieri. The likely intellectual agent behind
the emblems’ literary and political program was the connoisseur and courtier Lelio
Guidiccioni. The book reflects a courtly listening practice: reading and contemplation
as well as singing and hearing. |

As an object of material culture, Frescobaldi’s Primo libro d’arie musicali printed
in Florence in 1630, presents some unsolved conundrums. It offers a wealth of visual
imagery including an elaborate frontispiece, illuminated initial letters, decorative
panels and most importantly, a series of emblems appended to five of the songs. The
nature of the book as an object raises questions as to the reception and intended
audience for the music. This article suggests an interpretation of the emblems and
other visual elements by reading into the ambiguities the emblems present and their
relationship to poetic texts, and offers an hypothesis as to their intellectual agency. |
