One of 17 chapters in an edited collection examining the natural if sometimes troubled
relationship between heritage and tourism. The chapter heading quotation is drawn
from the seminal work of Robert Hewison on the heritage industry and the discussion
here is also in part a critique of elite heritage and those who run it. While there
has been a shift towards more 'everyday' heritage and increasing diversity, how much
has really changed in the past few decades? Inter alia this chapter looks at heritage
agencies, natural heritage, industrial heritage, World Heritage and its implications,
funding and collaboration, and strategies for the future. Heritage plays an enormous
role in the Scottish economy, but what ethos and ideology does it present to the world
at large and are these appropriate to the country's past? What does the future hold
for the heritage industry? |
