46513 abstract This essay constructs the history of imagining Shakespeare in cultivated spaces and in particular of the commemorative 'Shakespeare garden' of 1916. It considers ideological differences between the Shakespeare garden as conceived in Britain as nativist and nostalgic and as conceived in the USA, where it solved the problem of the relation between the native soil of genius and the trans-global portability of the printed work to make Shakespeare 'at home' across the Atlantic.
