abstract |
This chapter explores the themes of social hierarchy, the construction of individual
or group identity, and memory via an examination of funerary practices in Roman Italy,
focusing upon the late Republic and early Empire. It assesses the contribution made
by different types of evidence for burial rites, funerals, and funerary monuments.
It analyzes the extent of conformity, diversity, and individuality in Italian communities,
and the extent to which practices at Rome may have acted as a model. |
