33236 abstract Introduction to the Special Issue on Question Generation of the Dialogue and Discourse journal. The paper provides a historical overview of research on Question Generation. It also defines Question Generation as a computational problem and distinguishes between a range of different kinds of Question Generation. The paper introduces the concept of the Question Generation Pyramid - the Pyramid is used to explicate the relation between different types of Question Generation. An overview of the papers in the special issue is given, using some of the aforementioned terminology and concepts. The paper concludes with suggestions for further directions in research on Question Generation.
