- The Future of Observability in an AI World Yes, really. it’s a bit of a mouthful, isn't it. I suppose I could have looked 'Observability' up, but - honestly - I didn’t, I took it on faith that Enterprise Technology Monthly last night would be informative and interesting, and true to form, it was another win for Ian Ellis. That’s brand values, for you. So, since you ask, observability is "a measure of how well internal states of a system can be inferred from knowledge of its external outputs”, or crudely put, using logs, metrics etc. to tell you things about the state of your system. If you know Logstash, Grafana, Splunk then you know part of the story, I think. The usual format of some interesting presentations (from Diana Licheva at Smithy, Karim Traiaia 💭 at Kerno and Tal Kain at Velocity) and a panel. My key take outs were that standards like OpenTelemetry are central and it’s still hard and messy. I thought there could have been more focus on the GIGO aspect of all this. If you don’t have internal standards for what is being logged etc. then you will indeed end up with a lot of stuff that is no use and hard to use. Since I have been reading about the history of drains and sewers it came to mind that if you just chuck something in your logs then you will end up like the River Fleet, not far from the LSE, hosts of the event, which apparently was full of dead dogs and worse, and no longer viable as a source of drinking water long long ago. Hmm, doesn’t bear thinking about really, does it? Over drinks later, it was pointed out to me by someone from Kerno that health inspectors can tell useful things about the spread of disease from sewers, so I guess my point was not all that inept. Pithy quotes from the panel: Guy Fighel: “Events rather than Logs and Traces" Fintan Ryan: “if you like vibe coding you’ll love vibe security” Christine Yen: "Enables companies to see their data as their own” as well as “Scars of a previous generation …” and “ … "20% code written by agents, how do we make sure to keep humans in the loop?” See https://lnkd.in/eBuSicZy #EnterpriseTech.London
